The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce is initiating Rogers Park's preparation for 2012 at their next event, which is accurately titled "Preparing for 2012".

Chamber President, Bill Morton stated that everyone is invited to participate and utilize the resources available at the Preparing for 2012 event. “This event benefits our members as well as other local businesses and organizations in Rogers Park with information and tips on... winterization, 4th quarter tax strategies and projecting the future of Rogers Park business in the coming year”.

In addition to Rogers Park 2012 presentations and info-packs, this is a networking event where guests will be introduced to our community and businesses can connect with other businesses and organizations in our neighborhood. Tastes will be provided by eight local restaurants and cafes including Back in the Days BBQ, Caribbean American Bakery, Charmers Cafe, Hop Haus, Leona’s, Luzzat Restaurant, Royal Coffee and The Fish Keg. Why is Gas so expensive in Chicago?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Chicago is not your kind of town when you pull into a local gas station.
Drivers in Chicago pay more for gas than they do in any other major metropolis in the continental United States. Analysts say that's due largely to a perfect storm of federal, state and local taxes.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Chicago was $4.32 a gallon on Tuesday, according to data from price tracker gasbuddy.com. That's more than what drivers pay in sprawling Los Angeles, where gas averaged $4.22 a gallon, and crowded New York City, where it's $4.20 a gallon.

Indeed, the only major U.S. city with higher prices is Honolulu, where gas must be imported from the mainland or from refiners on other Hawaiian islands. The average price in America's 57th largest city was $4.44 a gallon.

Gas prices have soared this year, driven higher across America as global oil prices spike on worries about political instability in the Middle East and lost supply from war-torn Libya.

Nationwide, gas prices average about $3.87 a gallon, up 26% from $3.07 at the beginning of the year, according to motorist group AAA.

But prices in Chicago, the nation's third-largest city, are being inflated by a litany of taxes that add an estimated 60 cents per gallon to the retail price, according to Dave Sykuta, director of the Illinois Petroleum Council, an industry group.

"Even when prices are lower, Chicago is always in the top three," he said. "And that's because of the taxes."

Just as in the other 49 states, drivers in Illinois are subject to a federal excise tax of 18.4 cents a gallon for gasoline.

In addition, most states have an excise tax on gasoline, which ranges from a low of 4 cents a gallon in Florida, to as much as 35 cents in California. In Illinois, the excise gas tax is 19 cents a gallon.

Illinois is one of a few states where sales tax also applies to purchases of gasoline. That means there's an additional 6.5% tacked on to the price per gallon.

On the local level, analysts say Chicago may be the only major city that imposes a flat tax, 5 cents a gallon, on the sale of vehicle fuel to a retailer doing business in the city. That's on top of a 6-cent-per-gallon tax levied by Cook County.

Lastly, as most states do, Illinois slaps a small tax on gas stored underground to help pay for the environmental impact.

"Add it all up at today's prices, and the privilege of living in Chicago costs you 50 to 60 cents a gallon," said Sykuta.

Illinois officials say taxes are not solely to blame for the recent run-up in the price of gas in Chicago.

Susan Hofer, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Revenue, said the state fuel tax hasn't changed in decades, while the gas tax charged by Cook County actually dropped last year.
"The high price of gas can be attributed to a lot of things, but not taxes that haven't changed in 20 years," she said. "It's a nice excuse, but it's just not true."

Hofer said gas prices in Illinois have been pushed higher recently due to broken pipelines in the state and in neighboring Michigan. In general, she added, gas prices are higher in Illinois because crude oil must be shipped overland to reach the state, as opposed to California and New York, where oil imports come by sea.

"The price of gas is extremely volatile and very little of the cost is taxes," she said.

Tom Kloza, chief analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, said there are also some seasonal factors at play.

He said refiners located in the Great Lakes region have been shut down recently as they prepare to make the cleaner blends of gas that the state requires during the summer months.

That has squeezed refining margins and put upward pressure on gas prices across the Midwest.
But in Chicago, said Kloza, "it's mostly the taxes."

EMPIRE CARPET MAN DIES

Lynn Hauldren, 89, the advertising copywriter who became the inspiration for the Empire Carpet Man in the 1970’s and helped launch their signature jingle into national recognition, died Tuesday, April 26, according to an Empire spokesperson.

Mr. Hauldren rose to became a decades-long advertising icon, as the person who wrote the catchy jingle that accompanies the company's famous phone number, and often delivered it with style: “Five-eight-eight, two-three-hundred ... Empire.”

“Lynn was truly passionate about the Empire brand,” said Steve Silvers, chief executive officer for Empire.

“He has made an indelible mark on advertising history with his creativity and warmth. Lynn will always have a special place in the hearts of many. Our thoughts are with his family during this time.”

The company’s owner during the time requested that Mr. Hauldren serve as the on-air talent for the spots after unsuccessfully auditioning several other people for the role. This decision launched him into pop culture stardom. Mr. Hauldren went on to serve as the inspiration for today’s Empire Today brand. He helped to launch the signature jingle into advertsing history as one of the nation’s most popular jingles.

In a 1997 interview with the Tribune, Mr. Hauldren commented on how the commercials transformed him into a celebrity.

"People are good-natured," he told the Tribune, "but once in a while they'll grab at you and say, 'Here's that carpet dude!' or 'Hey! Aren't you somebody?' I always hope folks understand I'm not a celebrity. I'm just a TV pitchman, a glorified salesman."

Mr. Hauldren was a decorated World War II veteran who continued to lend his voiceover talent to Empire’s commercials until his passing.

In addition, he was known as a key singer in the barbershop quartet arena, recording several albums with the quartet, Chordiac Arrest, and a vocal ensemble called Chicago Natural Gas.

“Lynn was just a joy all the time,” said Tom Felgen, who along with Hauldren sang the popular jingle. ”He was a neat and special guy who was really wrapped up in music and words. He had a very natural way of writing things. When we were singing together, it was total fun all the time.”

Patio Theatre

This is how its done when a community works together. This is a recent picture of the inside of the Patio Theater. A theater that had closed and was unsure if it would ever be open again.

The 1927 Patio Theatre was one of just a few classic moderately-sized single-screen neighborhood movie houses in Chicago not to have been carved up into multiple screens.

The Patio Theatre is located at the corner of Irving Park Road and Austin Avenue in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood.

The Patio's auditorium had a great Atmospheric style effect with twinkling "stars" and drifting "clouds" in a night "sky". The theater has remained unused since it closed in 2001. Work began in the summer of 2010, to restore, for a planned re-opening in early-2011.

Good morning,

Nine years ago, nearly three thousand Americans lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Like many Americans, I was shocked and horrified by the attacks on our country. But I was also inspired by the heroism and selflessness of so many of my fellow Americans in the wake of this tragedy.

From the brave men and women of Flight 93 who sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of others, to the first responders who rushed without hesitation to help those in need, to the young men and women who chose to join our Armed Forces following the attacks - these tragic events united Americans in a remarkable spirit of solidarity and compassion.

It’s that spirit of selflessness and service that inspired the first September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance last year. On this day all Americans can honor the brave men and women who lost and risked their lives by serving others in their community.

Tomorrow, I will be volunteering with Mission Serve, an initiative bringing together civilian and military communities through service and volunteerism. Working alongside active duty members of the military, wounded warriors, veterans, military spouses and students, I’ll help renovate a community center at a retirement community for veterans in McLean, Virginia.

Kiddieland Gone

On June 30, 2010 on what would have been a very busy day at Kiddieland in Melrose Park, the well-known sign was removed. According to staff it took a little over an hour for the girl to come down. The boy was trickier and staff photographer Suzanne Tennant was there to witness it as crews used torches and crow-bars to pry the little fellow from the perch that has been his home since the late 50's. Passer's by stopped to look up while waiting at the lights and some even pulled over to take photos and video. One family from Park Ridge sat for much of the process to watch. Tammy Sako the mother commented, "It's like going to my grandmother's funeral." The Kiddieland lot will be occupied by a Costco but you will still be able to visit the sign thanks to the Melrose Park Historic Society. The sign will be placed somewhere near Village Hall. Good evening,

Today at 8 p.m. EDT, I will address the nation from the Oval Office about the end of the war in Iraq.

We are at a truly historic moment in our nation’s history. After more than seven years, our combat mission in Iraq will end tomorrow.

As both a candidate and President, I promised to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end. Now, we are taking an important step forward in delivering on that promise. Since I took office, we’ve brought nearly 100,000 U.S. troops home from Iraq, millions of pieces of equipment have been removed, and hundreds of bases have been closed or transferred to Iraqi Security Forces.

Our combat mission in Iraq is ending, but our commitment to an Iraq that is sovereign, stable and self-reliant continues. As our mission in Iraq changes, 50,000 U.S. troops will remain in Iraq to advise and assist the Iraqi Security Forces as they assume full responsibility for the security of their country on September 1. We will forge a strong partnership with an Iraq that still faces enduring challenges.

For nearly a decade, we have been a nation at war. The war in Iraq has at times divided us. But one thing I think all Americans can agree on is that our brave men and women in uniform are truly America’s finest. They have put their lives on the line and endured long separations from their family and loved ones.

All Americans owe our troops, veterans and military families a debt of gratitude for their outstanding service to our nation. Over the past few days, thousands of Americans have taken part in our Saluting Service in Iraq effort on WhiteHouse.gov, sending their messages of thanks and support to our troops

Episode 13 - Proving Ground

At a secret training facility, a young group of cadets are put through their paces by a tough taskmaster: Colonel Jack O'Neill. Through several rigorous training scenarios we see how hard it is for these four young troops including Lt. Hailey (from last season's "Prodigy") and Lt. Elliot, the team leader, to qualify for assignment to off-world Stargate teams. Only the very best of the best make get a Stargate team assignment. But midway through a training exercise, the group is interrupted by news of a possible foothold situation at SGC. Knowing that many other troops may be compromised, O'Neill has no choice but to take his recruits into a very real battle at Stargate Command. The young team must now pull together and use all their skills to prove to the SGC and themselves that they

Episode 14 - 48 hours

An off-world mishap causes an SGC-bound wormhole to prematurely disengage, apparently trapping Teal’c on another planet. However, when an attempt is made to dial back out, the computers flag an “unidentified error”. It doesn’t take Carter long to discover the problem. Teal’c is not stranded off-world. He is trapped within the buffer of the gate itself. While Daniel is dispatched to Russia to secure their DHD, Carter works feverishly to save their comrade. But a complication arises in the form of Colonel Frank Simmons who informs the SGC that the government will not allow the gate to remain inactive indefinitely. He gives them a deadline – 48 hours. Ultimately, to save his friend, O’Neill must partner up with an old acquaintance and seek out answers from a remote and dangerous source.

Episode 11

A Russian transport vehicle is ambushed and its valuable cargo, a captured Jaffa, is taken by force. At nearly the same time, Major Carter is ambushed while getting into her car and abducted by mysterious men dressed in black. When Carter goes missing for several days, General Hammond authorizes O'Neill and Daniel to investigate her disappearance. O'Neill's investigation takes a strange twist when he is contacted by the former NID operative, Col. Mayborne. Desperate to find Carter, O'Neill must trust his old nemesis in the hopes of bringing Carter back alive. Working with Maybourne, O’Neill, Daniel and Teal’c discover information that leads to a mysterious hospital and the nefarious workings of a reclusive billionaire. Can SG-1 rescue Carter from the doctors’ deadly experiments and discover the connection to the captured Jaffa?

Episode 12

An alien ship is spotted heading toward Earth, and from its unique energy signature, SG-1 determines that it is related to the pod found in Montana the year prior: Marty the alien's pod (episode "Point of No Return"). They estimate that the ship will reach Earth in three days and set out to find Marty and see what he knows about it. When they do, they find that he has become a Creative Consultant for a brand new Sci-Fi television series called "Wormhole X-Treme." The series was created from a script that Marty wrote and the story line bears and eerie resemblance to the Stargate program. General Hammond's not overly concerned, believing that such a show will give SGC plausible deniability in the event of a real leak in the future. O'Neill is sent to find Marty on the "Wormhole X-Treme" set as the show's Air Force Technical Advisor. But when O'Neill connects with Marty he's surprised to discover that Marty has no memory of their past relationship or of the real Stargate Command. O'Neill has to get to the bottom of Marty's sudden memory loss and see if it is somehow connected to the impending arrival of this alien ship.
